New Delhi: The Congress-led UPA has been projected to have an edge over NDA and others in the Lok Sabha elections which are expected to produce a highly-fractured verdict, exit polls on television news channels predict.
The results of the surveys, shown by the channels at the end of the fifth and final phase of polling in the month-long exercise, have placed the BJP-led NDA not very far behind the UPA and the Third Front at a little over 100 seats.
Headlines Today channel gave Congress and its allies 191 seats against 180 to BJP and its allies. The Left parties, which played a crucial role in the outgoing Lok Sabha with 60 seats, has been projected to get 38 while 'Others' including the BSP are set to get 134 in a House of 543.
In its projections, India TV channel said UPA would get between 195 seats and it could go up to 227 if 32 seats of RJD, LJP and SP are added. The channel has given NDA 189 and the Third Front 113. 'Others' are projected to get 14 seats.
Exit polls had been way off the mark in 2004 Lok Sabha polls, with most of them projecting BJP-led NDA as the winner which did not turn out to be correct. Ultimately, in 2004 elections the Congress and its pre-poll allies got 216 seats against a projection ranging from 170 to 205 seats. The BJP-led NDA had secured 187 seats against the projections of over 240 to 250 seats.
In the predictions by NewsX channel, the UPA has been projected to get 199 seats against 191 of NDA while the Third Front gets 104 and 'Others' 48. Congress alone is expected to get 155 and BJP two less.
UTVi channel gives UPA 195 and along with SP, LJP and RJD, it gets 227. The NDA has been given 189 seats and 'Others' 14.
In its projections, Times Now gave UPA 198 including 154 for Congress, and NDA getting 183 with 142 for BJP. The Third Front is likely to get 112 including 38 for the Left parties. 'Others' are projected to get 50 seats.
Star News channel put the tally for UPA at 199 with Congress alone expected to get 155. The NDA is tipped to get 196 including 153 for BJP and the Third Front 100. 'Others’ are expected to get 48 seats. CNN-IBN

The BJP leader said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were insensitive to the sufferings of Tamils in Sri Lanka and more concerned about letting off Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, a suspect in the Bofors payoff case.
“The PM had said that if Quattrocchi is innocent, then he should not face any inconvenience. I would like to ask the PM what about my Tamil brothers who are bearing atrocities in Sri Lanka,” he said.
"This fast-unto-death must be the only one of its kind in the world. It lasted for just four hours. It started after he (Karunanidhi) had his breakfast and ended before lunch," Modi told an election rally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies in this industrial city of Punjab Sunday.
"I cannot understand what kind of a fast was this," Modi wondered.
Modi praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "Nitish Kumar has done a lot for the development of agriculture in Bihar," Modi said.
Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi, reacting to Modi's comments on Afzal Guru, said it showed the BJP leader's "duality".
Singhvi said that the queue of people on death row was from 1998 to 2006, during which time the NDA was in power till 2004. "Afzal's number is 22 in the queue. Before clearing the backlog, the BJP expects the government to go straight to number 22, just because of his religion."

The electoral fate of political heavyweights Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP’s prime ministerial nominee L K Advani, former prime minister and JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda, senior Left leaders Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) and Basudeb Acharya (CPI-M) and senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh were decided in the third phase that covers 107 constituencies.

The 14 constituencies in West Bengal, where the polling was held for the first time in this election, recorded the highest turnout of 64% followed by Karnataka (57), Gujarat (50) and Maharashtra (45%).
The turnout in Mumbai, the country’s financial hub, was estimated at 45% as the metropolis witnessed the first election six months after the November 26 terror attacks.
The lowest turnout of 25% was in Anantnag constituency in Jammu and Kashmir where the separatists had called for given a poll boycott call.
With the completion of the third phase, the voters have given their verdict in 372 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. Two more phases are to be held on May 7 and 13 before counting of votes is taken up on May 16.
The voters’ response in the first two phases was at around 60%.

A division bench, comprising Justices P N Ravindran and P Bhuvanadas, directed the police to produce Mr Shashindran before the Judicial Magistrate in Sultan Bathery tomorrow and release him thereafter. The court also directed the police to conduct medical tests on him. Mr Shashindran, a Congress (S) worker, had joined the Congress.The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had moved a no-confidence motion against the Gram Panchayat.The vote of Mr Shashindran was crucial as the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) was having 11 members and UDF had 10, before he moved to the Congress. Thiruvananthapuram > Israel is the spice of this election season and a subject close to the heart of politicians in Kerala. Nearly 27 per cent of the State’s population is Muslim and the people, especially in the Muslim-dominated northern districts, have a long history of association with the Arab world and sympathy to the Palestinian cause.
India’s growing ties with Israel, especially the Indo-Israel missile deal signed a few days before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, have become an embarrassment for the Congress and the Muslim League in Kerala, partners in the UPA Government at the Centre as well as the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) in the State.
Therefore, no sooner was the former UN Under Secretary-General and author Shashi Tharoor declared the Congress candidate in Thiruvananthapuram, than an article he wrote in January in the context of the Mumbai terror attacks for Project Syndicate (which distributed it to over a hundred newspapers around the world) came in handy for the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the anti-League Muslim fringe parties in Kerala to beat the Congress and the Muslim League with.
As it appeared several days later in an Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, the article was titled “India’s Israel Envy”, and very soon was being read in India in the context of Israel’s action in Gaza. Mr Tharoor has since been trying to explain that “it was not his title,” that the article was “not about Israel,” and that he had only been trying to tell those in India who were arguing for such an Indian strike in Pakistan that “we are not Israel and we should not do what Israel has done.”
In an interview to Business Line (excerpts of which were published on March 31), Mr Tharoor said: “Within a week of the article appearing in Israel and so on, a number of my Arab and Muslim friends said, look, ‘you have opened yourself up to a misunderstanding.’ Therefore, in my monthly printed column, I issued a statement saying that it was a misunderstanding and it was not on purpose. It has taught me a lesson as a writer not to write on something that was an ongoing situation when the situation itself was likely to evolve beyond the ordinary. So that is the one mistake for which I am willing to apologise.”
But the damage was done and the issue snowballed into a major controversy, threatening the fortunes of not just Mr Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram but of many UDF candidates. Some fringe Muslim groups, with pockets of influence in many districts, have since declared support to UDF candidates in many constituencies, but not to Mr Tharoor.
Many anti-League parties such as Abdul Nasir Maudany’s PDP have, along with the CPI(M) and the LDF, launched a campaign in Kerala to expose what they term the Congress and the Muslim League’s fondness for Israel.
On March 28, the CPI(M) also sought to bring the air defence missile deal that India has signed with the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) into the centre-stage of the Kerala election scene while demanding a CBI inquiry into the alleged kickbacks involved in the form of “business charges totalling Rs 600 crore.”
Missile deal
The targets of these allegations were obvious and the Defence Minister, Mr A. K. Antony, flew down on April 3 to launch his election campaign and reply to these allegations. Mr Antony said the deal was transparent and a result of talks going on since 2002; that it had been approved at several levels including finally by the Cabinet Security Committee and that it contained an integrity clause that allowed any future government to take stringent action, including legal, to recover the cost and debar the company from any future transactions for a period.
But Mr Antony has left too many questions unanswered, including why India signed the deal with the same company involved earlier in the Barak missile deal corruption scandal (during the NDA rule), as the CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Mr Sitaram Yechury, pointed out here on Monday.
With ten days to go for the April 16 polling in Kerala, Israel has become a key campaign issue in all the 20 constituencies of the State, with the LDF leaders explaining the implications of India’s huge Defence purchases from Israel on the Palestinian people, how Israel had been benefiting economically from India and how, therefore, India was also becoming responsible for the killings of Palestinians by Israel.
But the Opposition UDF is countering these charges, saying the missile deal has been brought up by the CPI(M) merely to divert attention from the SNC-Lavalin corruption case, which is now before the Kerala High Court, with the CPI(M) State secretary, Mr Pinarayi Vijayan, as one of the accused. (The case relates to the award of contract for the rehabilitation and modernisation of three hydro-electric projects in Kerala in the mid-1990s.)
“The CPI(M) is raising the allegation against the missile deal because the UDF had already made the Lavalin case a major election issue in Kerala,” the Opposition Leader, Mr Oommen Chandy, said a few days earlier in Kozhikode.
Tough election for LDFThe prospects do not appear as rosy for the LDF in Kerala this time as they were in 2004 and the CPI(M)-led coalition is engaged in a tough contest in almost all the 20 constituencies in Kerala, where a significant factor that would decide the fortunes of the two Fronts is the mind of the minorities.
Even though the Indian Union Muslim League often claims to be the representative of all Muslims in India, it has so far remained only as a party of the Muslims of Kerala. Yet, ever since the Muslim majority Malappuram district was established by a Communist government in 1969, the Muslim League had managed to have two representatives in Parliament, from the two constituencies in the district, Ponnani and Manjeri (now renamed Malappuram after the delimitation exercise).
But that tradition was broken in 2004, with Manjeri voting for a Muslim candidate fielded by the CPI(M) instead.
It was an election in which all the 17 Congress candidates who contested from Kerala lost and the UDF had, therefore, only one representative in the last Lok Sabha — the IUML’s Mr E. Ahmed. Winning from the only other remaining League stronghold, Ponnani, he went on to become the Minister of State for External Affairs in the Manmohan Singh Government.
In this election, the CPI(M) is bent on breaking the monopoly of the Muslim League in Ponnani as well, the last remaining League bastion, and defeating Mr Ahmed in Malappuram too, with the support of the PDP and other anti-League forces.
There is also a sizeable section among the population in the 20 constituencies which considers Saddam Hussein a hero, George Bush a villain and Israel the arch enemy of the people of the Muslim world. Hence, the unlikely focus on Israel as a mobilisation strategy in Kerala.thapuram:

Gandhinagar: BJP senior leader LK Advani on tuesday trained his guns on CBI for dropping the name of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi from Interpol's Red Corner notice list and demanded a probe into the agency's role during the last five years.

"This is a serious decision. It is not a question of Quattrocchi alone but the entire role of the agency during the last five years which should be probed. It is a very serious issue. They have become the "dastak" or "handtool" in the hands of politicians," Advani, while campaigning in his constituency, said.

In Delhi, BJP spokesman Prakash Javdekar accused the Congress of diktating the CBI to help the "personal family friend of the Gandhi family" Quattrocchi and said the CBI has now become Congress Bureau of Investigation.

"CBI has now become Congress Bureau of Investigation. They are following the diktats of Mrs (Sonia) Gandhi. They wanted to clear the file before the NDA government takes over," Javdekar said.

The BJP termed the controversy which has erupted just two days before the third-phase of the general elections as "Congress ka haath Quattrocchi ke saath".

"Congress has given slogan: 'Congress ka haath, aam admi ke saath'. After five years it has been proven 'Congress ka haath, Quattrocchi ke saath'. So this is what Congress has done with the country," Javdekar said.

"Their only mission was to free the personal family friends of the Gandhi family and they have accomplished it," he said.
